A TURQUOISE-GLAZED VASE, HU
Qing dynasty, Qianlong period
30 cm high
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.
inv. n. 3357.

The globular body supported by a circular foot and surmounted by a waisted neck, two elephant head handles to the shoulders, the whole surface moulded with horizontal bands of floral, geometrical and ruyi heads motifs under a bluish-turquoise glaze.

The combination of the turquoise glaze with incised decorative motifs inspired by archaic ritual bronzes is one of the many achievements of the porcelain production in Jingdezhen during the reign of the emperor Qianlong, who was an enthusiastic connoisseur and collector of antiques, and at the same time a convinced promoter of a style in which the traditional ornamentation combines with the contemporary taste.

A very similar vase in in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inv. 79.2.885).
