A POWDER-BLUE GROUND TANKARD AND COVER WITH SILVER MOUNT
the tankard Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, early 18th century; the mount probably Dutch, early 18th century
14 cm high
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.
inv. n. 3905.

The shape of this tankard is inspired by European late Baroque ceramic and metal containers. The European mount on this example is rather invasive, especially on the upper section of the handle where it covers a moulded dragon head with open mouth.
A very similar tankard with a gilt decoration of Buddhist lions playing and a comparable metal mount is published in M.A. Pinto de Matos – R. Kerr, Tankards and Mugs. Drinking from Chinese Export Porcelain, London 2016, pp. 104-105, n. 29 (the authors illustrate another related example in the Edward and Judi Eckenoff Collection).
