A POLYCHROME ENAMELED LOBED DISH

23 cm diam
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.

The style of the main decoration – with an heron amidst two flowered shrubs and low rocks while another bird is flying around – is reminiscent of Japanese Kakiemon compositions.

A very similar dish is in the Porzellansammlung in Dresden (inv. n. PO 590), registered with the “N:136 I” number (“Green Chinese section. Chapter 111. Table Services and Accessories”) in the inventory of the collection of Augustus the Strong begun in 1721 as a purchase of 1727 (“On 24th may 1727, the dealers Leuthe Landsberger and Kell delivered … N. 136 I. 12 Salad dishes with fluted brown rims and decorated with birds”) (we are grateful to Helen Espir for the detailed information about the Dresden dish).

A similar dish is in the Far Eastern Museum in Stockholm (inv. BS-1288).
