Painted in green, yellow, red and black enamels, the decoration consists to the well of a scene with a cockerel amidst rocks, plants and flowers while two birds are flying around, the rim with four lobed panels containing plants alternating with sections with flower heads and leaves against a black speckled green ground.
The decoration on this dish, added in Holland toward 1710-1725, combines ‘Famille Verte’ and Japanese ‘Kakiemon’ motifs; the tall plants in the main scene are inspired by the engraving entitled Bamboes at p. 253 of Jan Nieuhoff’s Het geazantschap der Neerlantsche Oost-Indische Compagnie aan den grooten tartarischen cham (Amsterdam 1665) (we are grateful to Helen Espir for this information).
