The composition on these pieces was almost surely inspired by a European print, such as one of the many published between 1700 and 1720 by Claude Duflos (1665-1727) and other engravers based in rue St Jacques in Paris, characterized by the small dimensions and the oval shape, very often reproducing details of older paintings. Exported to China, they were perfectly suitable to be adapted to the rounded shapes of porcelain wares.
