A ‘MILK AND BLOOD’ ROULEAU BALUSTER VASE
Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, early 18th century
46 cm high
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.
inv. n. 3354.

The decoration on the body of this vase consists of two large rectangular cartouches alternating with lobed cartouches each with a composition of ‘birds and flowers’, the larger two with a seal, probably because inspired by paintings, reserved on a ground of vegetal scrolls with lotus flowers heads, the shoulder with four lobed cartouches with some of the ‘Hundred Antiquities’ (bogu) reserved on a geometric ground, the neck with a series of shou characters enclosed by two friezes of spirals, the whole decoration painted in iron red and gold with touches of polychrome enamels.

The style of the decoration on this piece is similar to that on another rouleau vase in this collection, which in turn shows a widespread use of polychrome enamels of the ‘Famille Verte’ palette, confirming the dating of the ‘Milk and Blood’ porcelain to the early eighteenth century.
