The theme of children playing in a garden – on this vase embellished with fences, flowers and some pedestals supporting vases with flowers and bonsai – is frequently used by Chinese ceramists already from the Ming dynasty and continuously during the Qing period. It has a strong symbolism related to the wish for many sons, long life and success in career. However, in this vase it seems rather a subject which could intrigue the European curiosity for such a different culture.
