A ‘FAMILLE ROSE’ DISH
Qing dynasty, early Qianlong period
39,5 cm diam
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.
inv. n. 3531.

The pose of the peacock in this dish could be inspired by an imagine contained in vol. 89 of the Sancai tuhui (“Collected Illustrations of the Three Realms”), the encyclopedia compiled by Wang Qi and his son Wang Siyi, originally published in 1609 and reprinted many times in the following centuries.

A dish with a similar decorative motif is in the collection of the Groninger Museum (Ceramics Crossed Overseas: Jingdezhen, Imari and Delft from the collection of the Groninger Museum, exhibition catalogue, Groningen 1999, p. 62, n. 78).

The museum has also another similar dish (inv. n. 3528).
