A CRACKLED-BROWN-GLAZED CYLINDRICAL VASE WITH SILVER MOUNT
the vase Qing dynasty, 18 century; the mount European, first half of the 19th century
21,5 cm high
Provenance: Naples, Villa della Floridiana, Museo Duca di Martina, Placido de Sangro (1829-1891) collection.
inv. n. 4543.

Overall covered by a light brown crackle glaze, the cylindrical body rising to a short waisted neck with the rim of the mouth underlined by a silver ring with incised lappets, the vase supported by a silver circular base with cabriole legs, an animated silver lizard rising from the metal base to the lower zone of the vase.

The brown glaze, known in Chinese as zijin (“metal brown”), was obtained through the oxidation at high temperature with the introduction of iron to the transparent glaze. It was already in the repertory of Jingdezhen from the Ming dynasty. During the Qing period, the addition of the suiyu mixture created the crackled surface, as appears in this vase.
