The bodhisattva of mercy and compassion is depicted in this sculpture according to one of his most common iconography, whose origin could date back to the Ming dynasty, with accentuated feminine physiognomic features, a large robe tied at the waist and a mantle on the head.
Similar sculpture of Guanyin were produced during the late Ming and Qing dynasty in large numbers also in the porcelain kilns of Dehua.
A very similar bronze sculpture of Guanyin is in the British Museum, London (inv. n. 1885,1227.8).
